MOTHER TO MOTHER
I slowly sip my favorite coffee
On this hot Saturday morning
I hear birds outside singing for me
I decide it is a beautiful day
It is a lovely day to say to you
From mother to mother
I know what you go through
Those loud screams from tiny lungs
When you are giving it your all
But it is seems never enough
When you want a child to hold
And to celebrate their every victory
But life has other plans
So we hold them in our hearts silently
From mother to mother
I lovingly say this to you
Rockstars pale in comparison to you
On days you feel not enough
On nights when the world is extra tough
When you have to put on your bravest face
So you can face the world with love and grace
I know, a mother with strong hands like yours
Always ready to give a warm embrace
Have hands that need hand holding too
And so I reach out my weary hands
I tell you I can keep you steady
I can hold you close too
Hands weary need not be alone
Hands need not be empty
When your heart is singing a sad song
I raise this glass to loving memories
From mother to mother
Here I am, I sit with you
We need not cry about our woes
Or force a laughter to let them know we are strong
Strength can be silent yet steady waters
Here I am, a mother too
I see you
From mother to mother
We need not fight battles like soldiers everyday
Sometimes we sit with a cup of coffee
Watching the world fall in total disarray
Amused by how every strong man
Turns to a mother for a moment of peace
For a lion’s pride can never be proud
When the household crumbles
In the absence of a mother’s love
So I write this for every mother
On this beautiful sunny day
Hold my hand
Cry not, at least not alone
Laugh at the world
Raise your glass with your favorite poison
Keep your pride proud
And mother another mother
So we will never be alone.
- For Rose and Shiela, thank you for holding my hand even when I did not ask. It was easier to surrender knowing you guys were there to hold me together.
- For my mother - Nenita, my sisters - Yvonne and Kara, for Sabalorma, Isidra, Doris, Estrella, Elena, Fatima, Donna, Elise, and all the beautiful mothers I know.
