HAPPINESS

Show me what happiness looks like to you
Is it cherry blossoms slowly opening up when spring comes?
The smell of lavenders on the fields when you go for walks?
When you go home at the end of the day
And hear running footsteps down your steps
And the creaking of the door that opens to a smile
Getting into tiny little arms that are telling you
You did alright and you are home safe
Happiness is right inside their embrace.

Show me what happiness looks like to you
When you are having an awfully crappy day
Can you find the sunshine within?
Even if there is no reason for a grin?
Will a cheerful greeting from a stranger be enough?
When the going gets tough
And when you wish to just survive the day
Is happiness really kindness working its magic
On someone who is trying to go about her way.

Show me what happiness looks like to you
When you’ve had about enough
When you’re just trying to keep your head above water
Or when your coffee is too bitter
It’s just one bad thing after another
With the clawing and gnawing anger in your heart
When all you want to do is fall apart
Is happiness finding time to forgive?
And letting go of all the anger that is brewing from within.

Show me what happiness looks like to you
When all you want to do is hold his hand
While you love from afar
And you long from where you are
But the reality is this
You weren’t born for his kiss
So you tell yourself you’re happy too
If he’s with someone who loves him true
Though not with you
Is happiness watching love unfold for the love you hold
Even with the breaking into a thousand pieces of your heart?

Show me what happiness looks like to you
When you watch her last breath
And her eyes slowly empties
And you sing her a sad song
Hoping your voice is the last she hears
As you drown in your tears
Do you tell yourself she’s in a better place?
And you hold her tight for one last embrace
As their wails become her last farewell
She is the only one who loved you well
You can’t tell
If happiness is in all those memories
That opens up the wounds again and again
As you try to remember her smile and the love that came with it.

They say happiness is in moments
And in moments we have lived
We can’t always be happy
As we can’t always forgive
But how do you bring out moments of happiness
When you’ve lived your share of hurts?
I hope happiness quietly comes when you need it the most
Like someone who is silently loving you
Like a long lost friend
Like the night
Like a ghost.
